This November, students in Jennifer Gernhard's Meal Planning and Preparation and Cooking for Health classes are working on Community Service Learning projects. They are making 12 apple pies for the T.E.N. Luncheon, soups and bread for the Empty Bowl Project, and pints of frozen soup for the Thetford Food Shelf. ...

October’s Student of the Month is a junior who is known for her warmth, her sincerity, and her positive nature. Even while running her first cross-country race over at Woodstock in miserably cold, muddy, and rainy conditions, she smiled back at everyone who cheered for her. When it comes to academics, the same traits shine through. Kate Owen describes what it was like when Emily came to the library to work on her research paper last year: “I was so pleased she asked for help, listened carefully and then thoughtfully moved forward and came back with new questions. She's always a positive presence—she just exudes good will.” In World History this...

Thetford Academy celebrated its soccer and cross country athletes at the Fall Sports Banquet on Wednesday, Nov. 7. All teams had a strong season, marked by standout performances, tough match-ups, dramatic OT wins, personal records, and as always, a whole lot of Panther pride. The boys cross country team was honored for earning the Division III state title and taking first place in the MVL A Division. Three members of the boys team also earned a place in the MVL All-Stars: Owen Deffner '19, Eamon Deffner '20, and Bel Spelman '19. The varsity girls soccer team celebrated their second year in...

At times during the Thetford Academy - Vergennes Union High School Division III state championship game on Saturday, Nov. 3, it looked like intermittent heavy downpours would add an element of chance to the game.  But the Panther girls' resiliency, superior ball-handling skills, and deep playoff experiences over the past three years didn't leave anything to chance — even as the ball and field conditions became slippery. An insurance goal was added midway through the second half, resulting from a scramble in front of the goal after another Casey MacVeagh corner (one of nine she took during the game).  According to...

Boys Win State Behind Owen Deffner's First Place Finish; Girls Take Fifth It was snowy and cold and trail conditions were tough—but there was no stopping the Panthers at the VPA cross country state championship meet last Saturday. Owen Deffner '19 finished first in the D-III race with a time of 17 minutes, 42.1 seconds, leading the boys to an overall first place finish and the team's first state championship title since 2010. Ian Spelman finished fifth (18:46), Eamon Deffner took sixth (18:47) and Jacob Slaughter ranked 16th (19:29). The girls team also finished strong, taking fifth place out of 12 schools....

In the fall of 2014 and 2015, Chris Schmidt's Timber Framing class built two new dugouts to replace deteriorating structures for the Panther baseball team. This fall, Chris's class has designed and, as of Oct. 30, erected the frame of the first of two dugouts for the Panther softball team.  In September, the class of 12 students divided into three groups, each of which researched, designed, and constructed a scale model of a softball dugout. Using cad design software and applying the engineering skills they learned through the class, the students calculated roof angles, snow loads, and complex cuts for mortices and...
