Sugarshack Model

By Joseph Dunn

Next year the Thetford Outdoor Program is going to be building a sugarshack. For my capstone project I have built a model of this building. I first started by drawing the design on graph paper. I used a one inch equals one foot scale. I used building plans from a Vermont company called Jamaica Cottage Shop. I then used those plans to make my drawings.

Building this sugarshack model I learned a lot about using models, scales and how to make timber framing buildings. When I was planning, I thought it was going to be hard, but when I started building the sugarshack model it was a lot easier then I thought it was going to be. Cutting the first piece was challenging as it had to be the correct measurement. If it was wrong it could have affected all the other pieces and how they fit. Once I had one cut, I could trace it and the rest would all be exactly the same. My model will be a great resource for the students building the sugarshack next school year.
