Thetford Academy’s campus is 295 acres of field and forest, with stunning views of the highest peaks of the Connecticut River Valley.

The historic White Building, built in 1949 after the original building burned in the Great Fire of 1942, is the centerpiece and hub of Thetford Academy. Sitting at the head of the quad, the White Building is flanked by the the Arts and Science Building, the Vaughan Alumni Gymnasium, and Anderson Hall.

Thetford Academy has an extensive trail network for hiking, walking, running, and Nordic skiing, and its vast natural resources are integrated into TA’s curriculum in nearly every academic area. In 2015, TA signed a 10-year agreement with the State of Vermont’s Department of Forest, Parks & Recreation to manage the 177-acre Thetford Hill State Forest, extending the school’s reach and complementing its focus on experiential, outdoor, and environmental education.

Also in 2015, Thetford Academy acquired a new parcel of land adjacent to the main campus that provides both additional acreage and direct access to the State Forest. The Barrett property, named for its former owners, has stunning views of Mount Ascutney and southern Vermont. Since 2015, the property has been developed to house a timber-framed outdoor classroom (built in 2018 by students in the Timber Framing class), a maple sugar shack (built by students in TA’s Thetford Outdoor Program, and a 12-feature low ropes course installed in 2020.

Earlier in the 2000s, a successful capital campaign enabled TA to update many of its historic buildings, and expand its classroom, athletics, and theater space. The Vaughan Alumni Gymnasium is a state-of-the-art athletic facility seating over 400 spectators for athletic, school, and community events. The Martha J. Rich Theater, named for a long-serving and beloved former head of school, seats 220 and gives Thetford Academy’s thriving arts program a professional venue in which to rehearse and host its many performances.

Other campus features include:

  • State-of-the-art Science labs
  • Fitness and weight room
  • Greenhouse and outdoor vegetable gardens
  • Athletic fields with timber-framed dugouts designed and built by TA students; 2 batting cages
  • Thetford Outdoor Program (TOP) heated yurt/classroom
  • Groomed and maintained 5K cross country trail, the Dan Grossman Woods Trail
  • Miles of well-maintained hiking trails available on both campus property and in the adjacent Thetford Hill State Forest
  • A one-mile “flow track” mountain bike trail designed by OTB Trail Builders and TA students
