TA Honors Graduates with Scholarships and Awards

Every year on Class Day, Thetford Academy celebrates student accomplishments with a slate of awards and scholarships. For students in grades 9-11, the awards include each academic department’s recognition of outstanding student performance, junior college awards, community service awards, and the “Rock the Boat Award” – given from one student to another in celebration of their individuality.
For graduating seniors, the annual scholarships and awards are often emblematic of TA’s 203 year history, honoring alumni, faculty, and leaders who made their mark on TA’s community over the years. For example, there is the Virginia and Ruel Barrett Award, named for TA’s former Headmaster and his wife, recognizing their “great contributions to Academy athletics” and awarded to seniors who have consistently shown outstanding qualities of good sportsmanship.
Another legacy scholarship, the Frank and Emily Barker Traditions award, remembers the contributions of the Barkers (both TA Class of 1949) to the Academy. Emily Barker taught English and Drama at TA for 33 years and Frank Barker served the community on the TES school board, the TA Board of Trustees, and in the Orange East Supervisory Union. The Traditions Award is given to a senior who demonstrates “commitment to family, school, and community; selflessness, quiet giving, compassion, and humility.”
Celebrating deserving seniors with these longstanding scholarships and awards (see complete list below) connects the contributions of generations of Thetford Academy community members to the present – and the future – and reminds of us of our shared history and values.
