Thetford Arthouse Cinema Returns to MJR Theater on March 16

In case you missed it, Thetford Academy’s Martha Jane Rich Theater became a hot spot for local film enthusiasts last summer. The Thetford Arthouse Cinema (TAC), a 501c3 nonprofit, launched last year with a mission to “build local community by sharing the world’s greatest films.” The Cinema will return to TA this spring with an exciting new lineup of film and discussion events.

TAC will run three discrete sessions in the 2023 season, with the first session of the season starting on Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m. The new schedule (Tuesdays and Fridays through April 11) includes a wide range of arthouse films – the “world’s great movies, recognized by leading critics, publications and organizations as canonical” – as well as repertory films that “define genres such as film noir or the western,” and the occasional children’s movie for family-friendly viewing. All screenings and light refreshments are free and open to the public.

Experiencing films with other theatergoers in a true cinema setting creates community in “which local residents can meet each other, share a little popcorn, food, and drink, and stick around to talk about the film if that suits them.” TAC intentionally steers away from the classic (though great) films that many in the audience may have seen, instead choosing to focus on lesser-known films that will provide a shared audience experience of first-time viewing.

TA is excited to partner with the Thetford Arthouse Cinema and support their community-building mission. To sign up for TAC’s email list and stay up to date on their schedule of screenings, visit https://www.thetfordcinema.org/contact-us and look for the “Stay in the Loop” sign up form at the bottom of the page. See you at the movies!
