Track Athletes Break School and State Records in Burlington and Beyond

This spring, most of the track and field updates from coach Joel Breakstone begin with something like “in less than ideal conditions.” or “in misty, cool conditions.” – an acknowledgment of just how tough the weather has been for our athletes this season. But, with true TA grit, the weather hasn’t held the Panthers back from posting record-breaking performances meet after meet.

On Saturday at the Burlington Invitational, senior Uly Junker-Boyce – in just his second long jump competition after an achilles injury during the indoor season – jumped 23′ 4.5″ in his first attempt of the day. The jump was the best long jump ever across all Divisions in Vermont. In an interview with the Burlington Free Press, Uly shared his surprise and joy in the moment: “To be out here and to be competing again and to do something like that just makes me feel really good.”

The boys 4 x 100 relay team of Evan Rich, Sebastian Perdrizet, Emmett Terry, and Uly Junker also set a record at the Burlington meet, clinching the Division 3 state record with a time of 43.88. Senior Ava Hayden set new school records in the 1500 and 3000. Ava’s 1500 time (4:42.33) broke Emily Grossman ’94’s 34 year-old TA record and her 10:22.03 time in the 3000 earned her the Division 3 state record.

A week earlier in Brattleboro, senior Luke Miller captured a win in the 400, his time of 50.43 knocking down a 32 year-old Division 3 state record.

Up next, TA heads to Hanover, NH for the CVC North meet and on Saturday, the CVC Championships in Lebanon.
