Getting to Y Wraps Another Year of Making a Difference at TA

Getting to Y (GTY), a collaboration between UP for Learning, the Vermont Agency of Education, and the Vermont Department of Health, is a program that empowers students to effect sustainable change in their own school communities. At Thetford Academy, GTY just wrapped up its sixth year as a student club and another school year making a positive difference.

Building on the successes of 2024-2025 year, TA’s GTY team focused their work on mental health awareness and support. They used assemblies, information tabling, advisory activities, and in-school messaging to share information, resources, and support for students around a variety of mental health topics.

Some examples of this year’s GTY work in 2025-2026:

  • September: Advocated for Suicide Prevention Awareness through tabling, a spoken word poem performed at assembly, and a post-it event.
  • November: Shared “When the Holidays Aren’t So Happy” flyers and inSTALLments (resources and positive messaging posted on the backs of bathroom stall doors).
  • January: Celebrated “You’ve Got This Day” with tabling and an assembly presentation about goal setting and healthy choices.
  • February: Marked “P.S. I Love You Day” with suicide prevention messaging in assembly and a post-it event.
  • May: For Mental Health Awareness Month, students provided self-care resources, shared information through assembly, tabling, advisory, flyers, and inSTALLments.
  • June: Prepared a comprehensive round-up of helpful information to help students have a “Fun, Safe, Sober, and Free!” summer.

Getting to Y at TA is open to middle and high school students and meets one afternoon a week after school. Students can sign up to join during Thetford Academy’s club fair this fall. GTY’s TA students were featured on the cover of the program’s annual newsletter and on pages 12-13: Check it out here!
