During this challenging spring, as our nation deals with a global pandemic, we are also now reeling from recent acts of intolerance and racism, most notably the horrific death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of a uniformed police officer. Protestors crying out against racial injustice are rallying in small and large cities around the country, including in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Although at times some of us might feel removed from the violence and tension living in a more rural area like ours, it is impossible to ignore the senseless killings of Black Americans and reports of harassment and violence against countless others. We must resist the feeling of powerlessness in the face of forces that seem to be too big and beyond our ability to change. Taking small steps matters. We can challenge ourselves: to be informed about the news, to read about our nation’s history, to talk about challenging topics like race and racism, to listen carefully to others’ experiences, to reflect on our words and actions, to speak up when we need to, and to open our hearts.

In these times we must reaffirm who we strive to be within the Thetford Academy community and truly embrace our mission “to celebrate the unique worth of all students.” At the core of that mission is our commitment to practice and ensure tolerance, and to never tire as we strive to foster an ever more inclusive community that celebrates diversity. 

Thetford Academy unequivocally rejects all acts of intolerance, bigotry and racism. We want our community to know that all of us at TA – our faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees – stand united and resolute in our efforts to making TA an inclusive and just place to learn, teach, and work.
