Special Education

In accordance with the Vermont Agency of Education Special Education regulations, Thetford Academy serves students from all categories of disability whose stated Individual Education Program (IEP) goals, objectives, and services can be met within the Academy setting.

Special education at TA includes a continuum of services from consultation, referral, evaluation, case management, classroom accommodations, specialized instruction, and individualized programming.

The goal of the Special Education Department is inclusion. Its faculty and staff work in close collaboration with teachers, grade-level teams, the Student Support Team, and the Academic Council toward a positive, well-rounded, and successful student experience. The department works across teams to enhance communication among faculty and ensure implementation of each student’s plan. Special education faculty and staff also assist students with transition planning as students enter the TA community, and again as they plan for post-graduate life in college, work, military, and community settings.

The Learning Center, a well-equipped suite of classrooms and office spaces in the Arts and Science Building, is home to TA’s Special Education department. In the Learning Center, students have the opportunity to work with Special Education faculty and staff to receive structured support during the school day. Students with a current IEP may be awarded academic credit for successful completion of individualized study in the Learning Center.

The Skills Center is a program open to students who have a 504 plan and would like to have assistance with study skills, organization, and academic skills. Students accessing the Skills Center may be awarded academic credit for this course.
