Head of School Weekly Email: Spring Events & Summer on the Horizon

Dear TA Families,
Spring is on its way! Here are 2 not-to-miss March events at Thetford Academy:

  1. The snow melted fast this week, the sap is flowing, and sugaring season is in full swing. We invite everyone to our annual Maple Community Day @ TA on Sunday, March 22. Come by anytime between 10am and 3pm to see our sugar shack in action, taste some syrup, and tour our south campus. Thanks to Scott Ellis and his environmental studies and outdoor education students for hosting! More info here.
  2. Another March tradition: our local One Act performances as the drama program prepares for the springtime One Act competitions around the state. Join us this Sunday, March 15 to see a one act interpretation of Pride and Prejudice. Show times are 1:30pm and 6:00pm with an audience feedback session to follow. Read about the play, see the cast and crew list, and purchase tickets on our website.

And summer is on the horizon! While we weather through the fickle temps and muddy trails of early spring – and summer still seems a long way off – it’s actually the right time for students and families to be thinking about opportunities in June, July, and August. Summer programs are starting to recruit participants and applications are open. Keep in mind that many programs are just a week long – enough time to allow for a really immersive experience, but also compatible with balancing other priorities, like summer jobs and family time.

Here are four opportunities to highlight:

  1. TOP Summer Leadership Program: There are a variety of experiences to choose from – trips, trail crew, internships, garden camp and more! Opportunities for middle school and high school students. Registration & info link.
  2. Governor’s Institutes of Vermont: This week’s assembly featured an energetic GIV presentation. There is an amazing array of programming, from the arts to medicine to engineering and more. High school students only. To learn more & apply: https://giv.org. Move quickly – applications due 3/31/26!
  3. JAM Summer Programs: Reps from JAM, or Junction Arts and Media, in White River Junction will be at assembly in a couple of weeks to share more. In the meantime, check out their website to read about JAM Camp for middle grades and the Feature Film Intensive for high school students.
  4. Upper Valley High School Trail Corps: Cool opportunity to join students from around the Upper Valley for an intensive trail crew experience. High school age only. Learn more & apply.

Lastly, I want to congratulate the boys basketball team who made it all the way to The Aud in their playoff run again this year. They played their hearts out on Thursday night, in what turned out to be their last game of the season, against a determined – and victorious – Hazen team. And I want to wish the best of luck to those involved in upcoming weekend competitions: the Vermont STEM Fair (@ Norwich University), the Debate State Tournament (@ CVU), and the One Act Regional Festival (@ Peoples Academy)!

Happy (almost) Spring,
Carrie Brennan, Head of School
