Competition has started for fall athletics and the Panthers are off and running. In soccer, the varsity girls suffered a tough start to the season with four games and losses. They’ve battled hard in games v. Enoburg (2-1, with TA up at halftime), Stowe (5-0), Peoples Academy (1-0 in OT), and yesterday’s game v. U-32 ending with a 3-0 defeat. The girls travel to Lake Region on Saturday.
The varsity boys have had two games and are 1-1 for the season so far. In their opener v. a tough Rivendell team, the Panthers took the lead with the game’s only goal. Per the Valley News: “After 80 minutes of regulation that did not produce a score, the Panthers got past the Raptors on a golden goal by senior midfielder Jacob Gilman in the season opener for both teams.” On Saturday, v. Peoples, the Panthers fell 4-1. The boys will be at U-32 this weekend.
The cross country team had their first meet at Bellows Falls on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The boys won their meet, with TA junior Ben Mattern taking first place overall. Brady Sloop earned second, followed by Jasper Jones in sixth and Wendell Durham in eighth. On the girls side, more strong performances – Madelyn Durkee in second place, Charlotte Reimanis in fifth, and Charlize Brown, eighth.
Yesterday at TA’s first home meet, the girls earned third among five complete teams. Tied for second, the scoring went to only the sixth runner for each team, pushing TA into the third place slot. Madelyn Durkee was first for Thetford and fifth overall, with teammate Ava Hayden in sixth, just behind her. For the boys, TA placed fourth overall out of seven complete teams. Ben Mattern was first for Thetford and fourth overall. Teammate Brady Sloop was second for TA and ninth overall.
Coming Up: Homecoming games (soccer) are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, starting with the V and JV boys at 10:00 a.m. and the V girls playing at 12:30. Alumni, we hope to see you there showing your Panther Pride! We encourage all members of our community to come out and cheer on the Panthers in their competitions.
