Regular Season Wrapping Up with Panthers Staying Strong
February 01, 2023
Regular season is wrapping up for the Panthers, and both the girls and the boys basketball teams are maintaining strong season records. The girls basketball team is currently ranked 3rd in the VPA’s Division III (10-4). Last Tuesday, the Panthers fell to Windsor (56-42) for the second time this season, breaking an eight game streak of wins. On Saturday, they made a comeback in a home game vs. Lyndon (53-38), before falling to Div. II Spaulding this week (44-32). The girls will host Oxbow this Thursday, Feb. 2 at the annual cancer awareness game, with all proceeds benefiting the Dartmouth Cancer Center.
The boys basketball team was recently featured in the Valley News for their comeback after last year’s tough season. Senior Jacob Gilman credited their success to strong chemistry among their players, ““We knew we had the skill last year, but we just didn’t have the chemistry. This year, we realized that if we know how to play as a whole and not just as individuals, we can click together and really be something special.” The boys are heading into the weekend with an 8-2 record, ranked 3rd in Div. III. They travel to Peoples on Friday.
The Valley News, in the 2023 Indoor HS Track Guide, noted that only one TA athlete on the team (Abby Egner ’23) has competed as an indoor track athlete. Coach Buttrey isn’t fazed. “The indoor track program always benefits from the strong coaching and the winning traditions that TA has had for years in its cross country and spring track programs,” he said. On Saturday, St. J hosted the Div. II state championships for throwing, TA’s Jada Rich ’23 earned 5th place in the event. All of the other championship events will be contested at UVM on Saturday, February 4th.
In alpine skiing, TA’s teams have been busy racing at Saskadena Six, Pico, and Bromley. In their first race of the season, TA focused on supporting first-time racers and adjusting to a new race format. At Pico on Jan. 19, the womens team was led by Maya Dixon placing 8th followed by Addy Holzer in 17th, Charlotte Reimanis in 19th, and Bianca Pulaski in 20th. Mavis Downey and Alicja Perdrizet placed 21st and 22nd. On the boys side, Isaac Yukica placed 23rd, Hardy Payson in 24th, Oliver Yukica in 26th, and Connor Gaine in 27th. See scores for Jan. 30 races at Pico.
