Outdoor Program Highlights

This year the outdoor class did Three big projects that I see as highlights of the year.  We built a yurt, went on an overnight, and we did a maple sugaring unit.

Building the yurt was a big accomplishment. We built our own classroom.  The yurt will be used as part of the outdoor program for many years to come.

We also did a maple sugaring unit.  In this unit we had some local sugar makers come in and they helped us set up our sap lines.  This project really helped us come together because you can not do an entire sugar operation with just one person.  We all had to help each other with anything and everything.

Then we did an overnight camp out inspired by the book “the trap”.  This camp out basically taught us how to be by ourselves and survive outside on a cold and snowy night.  This project taught us that we can do anything if we have the right mindset. It also was meant to simulate what Albert had to go through when he was stuck in his own trap for several days.

These three events mean a lot to me as a student because I have never been able to learn like this before.
