Q4 Report Card Mailing: Letter from the Head of School

The following letter accompanied students’ final report cards of the year, which were mailed home on June 22.

Dear Thetford Academy Parents, Caregivers, and Families,

This 4th quarter report card mailing marks the official end of the 2021-2022 school year.

At our closing assembly of the year on June 10, I asked students to think back on their year and reflect on key moments. We took a long, quiet pause as a community, with over 300 of us gathered in the gym, each summoning our own memories and highlights of the school year and considering takeaways. To be sure, there was a bit of fidgeting among some in the bleachers, but my sense looking at the crowd was that most were giving the prompt thoughtful attention.

With the final report card of the year in hand, it might be another good opportunity to reflect on the year – this time as a family. The report card is one way we document a school year: the courses taken, grades earned, teacher comments shared. It is full of details worth unpacking. Students have other types of evidence they might want to add to the mix too: projects, championships, performances, personal records, portfolios, awards, community service, new friendships, club leadership, internships, travel, job experience … and more.

I congratulate all of us on persevering through another school year impacted by the pandemic. For each student and family these challenges presented differently and at varied times, but we all had moments when we had to find the strength, grace, and resilience to make it through and make the most of the year. We know it wasn’t always easy or smooth.

A special congratulations to the Class of 2022. Our TA graduates are heading out into the world in pursuit of many paths, from philosopher to welder, from forester to security expert, nurse, farmer, engineer, educator – and many destinations yet to be decided. Thanks to all who attended Class Day and Graduation to honor their achievements and wish them well. It was a joy to be able to welcome the community again to these traditional year-end events.

Looking ahead to next year … Families of returning students will find next year’s school calendar in this mailing. High school students already received their 2022-23 class schedules in advisory on May 31. Schedules for middle school students will be sent out soon.

On behalf of all of us at TA, we wish you and your family an enjoyable summer season.

Sincerely,

Carrie Brennan, Head of School
