Head of School Weekly Email: The Maple Edition & More

Dear TA Families,

Until the snow blew in on a cold wind this morning, we spent most of the week enjoying springlike days on campus. Recent weather has been conducive to a productive sugaring season thus far. Students who sugar at home were invited up at assembly on Monday to share a bit of their experience with the school audience. The sugar shack here at TA has been busy, with the environmental studies and outdoor ed class taking the lead on managing the sugarbush, collecting sap, boiling and producing syrup, and hosting visitors from other classes and schools to check out the action.

The community is invited to an open house on Sunday. The sugar shack is located on TA’s south campus, between the outdoor timber frame classroom and the garden. All are welcome! Swing by and be a part of Thetford Academy syrup in the making.

Congratulations to the six seniors who were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society at River Bend this week: Hunter Clay, Heidi Hewes, Josh King, Ashlyn Osgood, Rebecca Osgood, and Dillon Vance! Read more about the event and check out a few photos on the TA website. Students who embark on a career and technology program as part of their Thetford Academy experience dedicate a lot of time to this academic and professional path, spending half of their school day for both the junior and senior years at River Bend (or Hartford CTC).

In other campus news …

  • A big shout out to the 7th, 8th, and 9th graders for their focused effort on the state standardized tests in recent days – and a reminder that the math testing will take place next week on March 26-27.
  • A reminder for everyone that there is no school on Friday, March 28, in order to make time for the spring inservice day for TA educators.
  • Best of luck to the cast and crew of the one act play tomorrow!
  • And we hope many high school students come out to enjoy the Spring Semi-formal this evening from 7:30-9:30pm!

Featured photos this week: A group from Norwich University visited campus on Tuesday to learn about TA’s sugaring operation; following a week-long artist residency with poet Geof Hewitt, the creative writing class hosted a poetry slam on Friday, won by Alice Stirling ’27; and the cast and crew of Rue wowed with their performances last weekend – and will be at again tomorrow as they compete in the regional one act festival, taking place here in the Martha Jane Rich Theater.

Wishing everyone a sweet sugaring season!

Carrie Brennan, Head of School
