Thetford Academy Students Celebrate the Arts with Bernie Sanders

Nine Thetford Academy choral students were among 135 musicians from across Vermont who performed last week at VTSU Castleton. The April 5 Choral Concert and Town Meeting on the Arts, hosted by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, was a powerful showcase of student talent and an important conversation about the value of arts education in schools. TA’s chorus, led by drama and choral teacher Jeff Seabaugh, performed three songs, Ella Fitzgerald’s “Blue Skies,” “A Light of Hope, A Song of Peace” by Mark Burrows, and “A Million Dreams” from the Greatest Showman movie soundtrack.

In a “Bernie Buzz” blog post after the event, Sen. Sanders talked about the profound impact art can have on our lives. “As human beings, the arts are how we learn who we are and think about the world we want to live in. Art fuels us in moments where hope feels far away. Quite simply, where there is art, there is hope.” Arts education is an essential part of any school’s curriculum, he says, “NOT just something nice to have if there’s enough money left over in the budget.” Thetford Academy students were proud to be a part of this statewide conversation and share the impact of the arts on their own school experience.
