TA Students Win Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Three Thetford Academy students, Layla Hanissian, Eloise Van Meter, and Olivia White, were recently recognized for their artwork and creative writing by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The awards program comprises the nation’s “longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7-12,” and is presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.
According to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards website, “Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.”
Layla, Eloise, and Olivia each won “Silver Key” awards for work they submitted to the Vermont Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The “Silver Key” recognizes “standout works submitted to local programs that demonstrate exceptional ability.”
Layla was recognized for fiction writing with her story “Candle Wax;” Eloise for her poems “Becoming,” “When You Return,” and “Yellow Leaves in the Rain,” and in the Critical Essay category for her piece entitled “Base and Fetid.” Olivia was recognized for her photography with her entry “Dog Roses.”
From February 15 to March 7, Vermont will showcase students’ award winning work at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Brattleboro, VT. On March 7th, award-winners will be recognized at an Awards Ceremony.
