TA Drama to Present “The Visit” on Nov. 19 & 20
November 09, 2021
The Thetford Academy Fall Play class will present performances of “The Visit” on Friday, November 19 and Saturday, November 20 in the MJR Theater. The play is by the Swiss playwright Friedrich Duerrenmat with an English adaptation by Maurice Valency.
The play is the story of the world’s wealthiest woman, Claire Zachanassian, who returns to her economically depressed hometown. She promises the town a billion dollars if the townspeople agree to help her right the wrong that was done to her by her former sweetheart, now a shopkeeper in the town. Throughout the play, we see how the promise of money affects the citizens.
The play, as Duerrenmatt described it, is first and foremost a comedy. However, with its macabre dialogue and bizarre characters, audience members may either laugh, cry, or squirm in their seats.
Drama teacher John Luce says, “This has been one of my favorite plays, since I first read it at the Middlebury German School. I am so impressed with the level of understanding and great characterizations which these high school students bring to their performances.”
Cast members – as well as the audience – will be masked for the performances.
Tickets for “The Visit” are $5 and will be available at the door and are first-come, first-served. Families are asked to sit together, socially distanced from other groups.
The play is presented under special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
