The Week in Panther Athletics
December 14, 2022
Regular season started this week for the Panthers, with the varsity girls basketball team coming out strong in their season opener v. White River Valley (32-30). The Valley News reported: “The Panthers, in Jolene Cadwell’s debut as head coach, edged the Wildcats in a defensive battle.” Junior Addie Cadwell led the Panthers’ scoring with 8 points. The girls will play at home on Tuesday, December 20, v. Windsor. The boys varsity team opened the season at Oxbow, where they defeated the Olympians 51-29 . They are slated to travel to Blue Mountain on Friday, with their first home game of the season scheduled for Monday, December 19 v. Rivendell.
TA’s indoor track team plans to travel to their first meet at UVM on Saturday. Though many of this year’s athletes are new to indoor track, the team is packed with seasoned runners. Sophomores Ben Mattern and Ava Hayden, in particular, are coming off very strong cross-country seasons. Sophomore Uly Junker-Boyce is poised to make the school record board in the long jump. All-around athletes Finn Linehan and Jada Rich, both seniors, look to be major contributors in their first-ever indoor seasons.
Also in running news, on Wednesday, TA senior cross country and track standout Madelyn Durkee signed with Quinnipiac College on National Signing Day. Durkee will join their Division I track and field team. From her TA coaches: “Madelyn will go down in history as one of the best cross-country runners and track & field athletes TA has ever had. She is the only TA athlete in over twenty years to have qualified for the New England Cross-Country Championship, which is a long-distance event, and for the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships running sprints. At TA, Madelyn’s name appears on the school record board a whopping ten times!”
Stay tuned for more from the alpine ski team – they are looking forward to starting on-snow training. The forecast is looking good with Friday’s anticipated snowstorm!
