Speech and Debate Teams Shine at State Tournament
March 11, 2025

The Vermont State Debate Tournament, held on Saturday, March 8 at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, saw 48 debaters grapple with the topic: Resolved: In the United States, the benefits of the use of generative artificial intelligence in education outweigh the harms. This was a timely and important topic, especially as generative AI continues to impact the landscape of education. Our students demonstrated impressive research and critical thinking skills as they navigated both the potential and the risks of AI.
This year marked the second season for our growing Speech and Debate team. Last year, we took six debaters to the state tournament; this year, we brought eight—and they didn’t disappoint!
Wendell Durham and Daniel Mann placed 5th overall, just shy of making it to the semifinals. This was a strong showing considering it was their first varsity year. To finish 5th out of 24 teams is a huge accomplishment. Additionally, Daniel earned 4th place in speaker points out of 48 qualifying debaters– an outstanding individual accomplishment.
We also had stellar performances from Maddie Piecuch ‘28 and Stone Reigler ‘28, Harper Grant ‘28 and Elijah Renner ‘26, and our senior duo, Hardy Payson and Brady Sloop. Each of them dedicated hours reading, preparing, and practicing. They supported one another, and I hope this experience has been as rewarding for them as it has been for me as their coach.
Hardy, our team captain, reflected on his experience over the last two years:
“When I first joined the debate team halfway through its inaugural season, I was out of my depth, but I saw an opportunity to improve, to understand arguments more deeply, and to challenge myself. Over the past two years, debate has become more than an item on my resume, it’s become a community and a space for growth.
Our team has truly come into its own, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people. I’ve watched my teammates grow into formidable debaters, and I’ve grown alongside them. The skills I’ve gained have shaped the way I think, communicate, and build relationships.
As my time on the team comes to an end, I feel both sad to leave and excited for what’s ahead. I know that the lessons and friendships I’ve gained here will stay with me, and I can’t wait to see how the team continues to grow in the future.”
Speech and Debate is an amazing opportunity for students to practice critical thinking, leadership, listening, and empathy– you have to see both sides of the argument! Is it hard? Absolutely. But that’s what makes it fun and rewarding. I can’t wait to see what our team will do in year three.
