Mary Bosco ’24 Advances to Poetry Out Loud Finals

On Thursday, March 9, junior Mary Bosco competed in Vermont’s Poetry Out Loud semi-final event at the Barre Opera House. Poetry Out Loud, created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, engages students in the exploration, memorization, and recitation of great poetry, building confidence and public speaking skills along the way. Thousands of Vermont students participate in Poetry Out Loud each year, starting in the classroom, moving to the school level, the state level – and for top competitors, culminating on a national stage.

Mary’s recitation of “Fairy Tale with Laryngitis and Resignation Letter” by Jehanne Dubrow and “Sorrow Is Not My Name” by Ross Gay last week launched her from one of Vermont’s two regional competitions to the state’s Poetry Out Loud final on March 16. The top five competitors from each region will take the state at the Flynn Center at 5 p.m.; at-home spectators can tune in to the livestream starting at 5pm on the The Flynn Center’s website. Congratulations and good luck, Mary! To watch the video of Mary’s March 9 performance, click here – she is the first competitor.
