The Thetford Energy Committee is sponsoring a year-long series of FREE forums and workshops in 2018 focusing on ways individuals can take action on a local level to create a global impact, including strategies to save money while reducing energy use and waste and building community. "Thetford 2050: The Good Life in a Post Fossil Fuel Era" begins with a kickoff movie screening and free community dinner on March 10th. Friday, Feb. 16, marked the lunar New Year and the beginning of the two-week Spring Festival in China, a time when many Chinese return to their hometowns and celebrate by participating in family, regional, and national traditions. This year at TA, we participated once again in a few of those traditions. “No Dumplings, no Spring Festival!” One of the traditional foods associated with Chinese New Year is jiǎozi, a kind of Chinese dumpling. Seventh grader Michael Fernandez out-spelled thirteen 7th and 8th graders to win Thetford Academy's fifth annual spelling bee, organized by English teachers Joe Deffner and Ray Chapin. Michael won on the twelfth round of the bee, correctly spelling "segregation" and "callous" for the win after classmate Noah Hill (who correctly spelled "cyclops" in the previous round) misspelled the word "Chesapeake."  Eighth grader Gordon Rio came in third place, correctly spelling "Bollywood" and "disengage" before stumbling on the word "cypher." In addition to the top three contestants, participants were:  7th graders Porter Burkins, Quinn Corcoran, Abby Egner, Natalia Gioia, and Jack Lawson, and 8th graders...

On Friday, Feb. 16, the opening reception and awards ceremony for the 10th annual Best of the Upper Valley High School Exhibition was held at AVA Gallery in Lebanon, NH. Sixteen schools with over 145 students participated in an incredible display of artistic talent. Juror for the show was Patrick Dunfey, Head of Exhibitions Design and Planning at the Hood Museum of Art. Ten TA art students have work displayed in the show.
