Head of School Weekly Email: Mid-January News & Events

Dear TA Families,

We are heading into a 4-day weekend as we pause between semesters and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday, ready for the launch of the new term!

If you are looking for things to do over the weekend – and into next week – we have a few invitations:

  • On Friday evening 1/16, the high school girls basketball teams host Oxbow for two home games at the Vaughan Alumni Gymnasium: JV at 5:30pm and Varsity at 7pm. There will also be a banner celebration for the 2025 Gatorade Athlete, Uly Junker ’25, during halftime.
  • On Saturday evening 1/17, Thetford’s SQC group will kick off a year of celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary with a film screening and Q&A session with the filmmaker here at TA. The community event is free with a start time of 7pm. More details here.
  • Following a slate of away games recently, the high school boys basketball teams will host 3 home games this week: 1/20 vs. Randolph, 1/22 vs. Montpelier, and 1/24 vs. Oxbow. Come out and cheer them on. Check the school calendar for details.
  • On Saturday 1/24, the Thetford Academy debate team will host a regional meet at TA. They are expecting as many 60 debaters from throughout Vermont and New Hampshire to participate. And they are recruiting citizen judges! Contact Debate Coach Kristen Downey to learn more about this volunteer opportunity, [email protected].

In other community news:

  • Thetford Elementary School has begun the recruiting and registering process for their kindergarten program next school year. Thetford families should contact [email protected] to learn more.
  • On Thursday, Jan. 22, there will be a forum on education in Vermont, hosted by the Norwich Democratic Committee. Panelists include Nic Cook, the chair of the Town of Thetford’s School Board. The event is at 6:30pm at the Norwich Public Library. More details here.

Lastly, congratulations to our indoor track teams for their big two-day state meet last weekend! Amazing individual and relay performances and PRs across the board – and the boys team came home as reigning division 3 champions. Read all about it on our website, with a link from there to the Valley News article. The team works hard – and also has a good time. Case in point: check out the team photo on Saturday, posing with their favorite stuffies 🙂

Have a good weekend,

Carrie Brennan, Head of School
