Dear Seniors, As I started to think about writing a letter to your class, I decided to reflect on my own graduation in 1978. I wondered if I might share something meaningful from mine. I dragged my yearbook out from a box in the attic, and paged through it in the hopes that I’d discover some nugget of inspiration for me as a letter writer, or even better, something I could lift from the pages and pass directly along to you.  I started with the handwritten notes from my classmates, as I was curious about what my friends had said to me...

Dear Class of 2020, Congratulations. You made it!!! What I remember from my last month or so of high school is how ready I was to leave. I wanted to leave the South, leave my parents, leave the house on Londonberry Road where I grew up...

Wow! What a mind-blowing end to your high school experience. There is so much to process. I won’t say too much here--you have most likely heard so many words of wisdom and encouragement from family, friends, and your teachers by now. But, chew on these morsels: learn something new--big or small--on a regular basis. It will pay off in the long run, because no one can ever take your education from you. Know that life’s journey is not a straight line--there will be zig-zags. And, finally, remember the only thing you can control is the moment you are in, so stay...

Dear Seniors, “When life gives you lemons,  make lemonade.”  “Every cloud has a silver lining.”  Many people gravitate to these mundane and clichéd sayings. I find myself repeating them to friends and family during difficult times or unexpected hardships. They are predictable, ordinary, almost habitual.  Perhaps the ordinary is the crux of their charm.  Difficult times throw people off balance. Familiarity offers stability. The routine and predictable “ways” are an anchor--a  “you are here”  in the realm of the unknown.  During the last two months, we have all been thrown off balance.  New routines and blurred routes replaced the familiar.  Through it...

Thinking about myself as a high school senior sent me to my yearbook to review the past in a way I hadn’t in quite a long time.  Peering out of the pages were young women all wearing the same style sweater and necklace and young men wearing the same style jacket and tie.  All the same!  The girls’ appearances, many with long hair parted in the middle or side or short hair framing their faces with a little flip at the bottom, indicate our late 70’s hairstyles.  The boys—the majority of their hair is long in the front combed over...
