TA's 1st-seed varsity girls defeated 16th-seed Winooski 6-0 in the opening round of the VPA Division III playoffs yesterday (Wednesday, Oct. 23). On a cold, damp, windy afternoon on TA's lower soccer field, the Panthers dominated from the start, racking up five goals in the first half before adding their sixth in the second half.  Scoring for the Panthers were Lily Brown, Kiana Johnson, Casey MacVeagh (2), Madi Powers, and Becca Wells, with assists from Kiran Black, Geneva Horster, Kiana Johnson, and Ellen Veracka. The Panthers take on number nine-seed Stowe in the quarterfinals at home tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 25).  Game time...


The 13th-seed varsity boys scored the first and last goal in their playoff game against 4th-seed Leland & Gray, but the Rebels scored the intervening three, as Leland & Gray edged the Panthers 3-2 yesterday. Nine minutes into the game, Ethan Steingas put a Tate Linehan pass into the net, and the Panthers took a 1-0 lead.  The lead didn't last long; within a minute, the Rebels tied the game, after which they added two more goals within the next 17  minutes; the score at the half was 3-1 Leland & Gray. The TA varsity girls completed their season in spectacular fashion, defeating U-32 3-2 on a Namya Benjamin shot three minutes into overtime, with Casey MacVeagh getting the assist. The 11-1-1 Panthers earned the top seed for the VPA Division III playoffs, with pairings to be announced tomorrow.  The Panthers dominated the first half, with goals by Kiana Johnson and Casey, each assisting the other on her goal. Scott Ellis, coordinator of the Thetford Outdoor Program (TOP), was recognized by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of Vermont (SHAPE Vermont) with the Physical Activity Leadership Award during a ceremony Oct. 19 in Killington. The state-wide award recognizes outstanding individuals who actively promote lifelong health and physical activity. Ellis, who teaches Thetford Academy's half-day outdoor and environmental education course and leads TOP's monthly student adventure trips, has made it his mission at Thetford Academy to engage TA students in active, outdoor experiences. It was a dark and stormy afternoon. Seriously. It was bitter cold. It rained.  It hailed. It sleeted. The field was muddy. The ball stuck in the mucky grass whenever it landed.
