About 1.6 million juniors in the United States entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Those who scored in the top 1% achieve the distinction of National Merit Semifinalist. Many of these students move on to become National Merit Finalists by demonstrating through distinguished performance high potential for future academic accomplishment. The Institute for Security, Technology and Society (ISTS) at Dartmouth College is pleased to offer, once again, free summer programs exploring cybersecurity to area high school students. We appreciate your assistance in encouraging students to apply for one of these five day programs, that will run July 9th through July 13th (Introductory Program) and July 30th through August 3rd (Advanced Program). The Language Department is excited to offer a trip to Costa Rica during spring break of 2019. Take advantage of “early bird” pricing by signing on before March 22.  Participating students must have finished at least one level of Spanish and be in the 9th-12th grade next year. Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [abridged] for their outstanding performance at the Regional Drama Festival at Hartford High School Saturday, March 10. Their show was selected to advance to the State Finals in Springfield on April 6 and 7. Thetford Academy was recognized for Excellence in Storytelling through Outstanding Company. Clare Swanson and Emma Bauer were recognized for Outstanding Stage Management, and Malcolm Silver Van-Meter, Hallie Zens, and Eli Kaliski each received individual awards for Excellence in Acting. The Thetford Outdoor Program (TOP) is hosting a campout in our new yurt Friday, March 16, through Saturday, March 17. The yurt is located at the top of Sunset/Sunrise Hill in the Thetford Hill State Park, adjacent to and a ten-minute walk from the school's main campus. Activities will start after classes on Friday and all students must be picked up at 10 a.m. at Thetford Academy on Saturday. An ideal location for camping, the yurt has a new wood stove that will insure everyone stays warm overnight. Students will cook dinner over the fire, play outdoor games, stargaze, and tell stories. The Thetford Energy Committee is sponsoring a year-long series of FREE forums and workshops in 2018 focusing on ways individuals can take action on a local level to create a global impact, including strategies to save money while reducing energy use and waste and building community. "Thetford 2050: The Good Life in a Post Fossil Fuel Era" begins with a kickoff movie screening and free community dinner on March 10th.
