By Spencer Williams To watch a video of the outdoor program highlights click Here This year the outdoor class did Three big projects that I see as highlights of the year.  We built a yurt, went on an overnight, and we did a maple sugaring unit. Building the yurt was a big accomplishment. We built our own classroom.  The yurt will be used as part of the outdoor program for many years to come. We also did a maple sugaring unit.  In this unit we had some local sugar makers come in and they helped us set up our sap lines.  This project really...

By Hunter LeFevre For my capstone project I made a sign to recognize everyone who helped build the yurt. The sign is two feet by two feet and made out of cedar wood. It was routed on a CNC router, then it was stained, painted and sanded. I really like how it turned out. I placed the sign on an oak post next to the yurt.  I made this sign so that everyone will know who made this great building....

By Alex Emerson I got the idea to build a woodshed for the yurt when I was piling wood onto the cold wet ground last fall. I thought it would be great to actually have something to store and keep the wood dry at our new outdoor classroom. I knew that this resource would be very useful for many years to come. I hope you enjoy this video I made about building the woodshed. I learned a lot about carpentry during this project.  I have been doing these types of projects for a long time, but never all by myself. I had to...

By Joseph Dunn Next year the Thetford Outdoor Program is going to be building a sugarshack. For my capstone project I have built a model of this building. I first started by drawing the design on graph paper. I used a one inch equals one foot scale. I used building plans from a Vermont company called Jamaica Cottage Shop. I then used those plans to make my drawings. Building this sugarshack model I learned a lot about using models, scales and how to make timber framing buildings. When I was planning, I thought it was going to be hard, but when I...

Our May Student of the Month has a true love of learning, as evidenced by his approach to course work. He does not see it as a chore or as something he needs to just “get through,” but more as a delicious meal to be savored. This junior’s written work demonstrates a determination to understand and elucidate challenging concepts at a level rarely seen in high school papers. Whether in essays or poetry, his writing is precise and dynamic, and his responses to text are filled with references to other literature or world politics. In fact, when asked to describe himself...
