Dear TA Families, Here is a list of events & opportunities coming up this spring - for students, for parents, and for everyone: First up: Tonight is the High School Spring Semi-Formal! Hosted by the junior class, the dance will be here at TA in the Vaughan Alumni Gym from 7:30pm-10:00pm. Concessions will be open throughout the evening. Spots are filling up quickly in TOP's Summer Leadership Program, but there is still space available for students to join TOP for exciting outdoor adventures: GLOW (Girls, Ladies, or Whoever), Vermont Adventure, and Garden Camp are still open! GLOW is an adventure-based trip catering to women-identifying and non-binary students who are looking to gain confidence in the outdoors in a supportive environment. Trip participants will develop leadership skills, explore the role of gender in the outdoors, and learn about the natural world. On Tuesday, April 18, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Thetford Academy will host a community conversation about substance use prevention for teens. “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen” is based on the educational sessions from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's “Talk. They Hear You.” campaign and aims to help parents and caregivers of youth (as well as anyone who works with youth) get informed, be prepared, and take action to prevent underage drinking, vaping, and cannabis use. Kait Christensen, an 8th grade student at Thetford Academy, was recently selected to race in the U14 Can Am events at Quebec's Mont Tremblant. The Can Am races feature the best skiers in the 12-13 age group; only the top 80 U14 female skiers in North America qualify to compete. Christensen, who is part of Burke Mountain's Junior Racing Program, earned a top 10 spot in eight of her team's nine races this season. Each spring, Thetford Academy sends students out to put in a "day's work" in their community and earn money for a cause. This tradition, called Operation Day’s Work, or ODW Day, takes place in schools across the country and the world. Over the years, Thetford Academy students have helped to raise tens of thousands of dollars for many projects centered around helping people, particularly children, around the world. On Thursday, April 6, Margaret Smallwood was one of two youth in the state of Vermont to receive Prevention WorksVT!'s Prevention Champion Award at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier. Margaret received the award for being a youth empowerment leader who has contributed to substance misuse prevention efforts at Thetford Academy and throughout our community. Since joining Getting to Y in 2020, Margaret has been an anchoring member of the team.
