Thetford Academy juniors Spencer Durkee and Dillon Vance have been a part of the region's youth mountain biking circuit for more than five years. Though TA doesn't have a mountain biking team (yet), they are standouts in the local scene. Both students race in two different leagues each year, for Vermont Youth Cycling (VTYC) and Woodstock Union Middle and High School, and this year competed in 10 races. With this year's season in the rearview, the results are in and worth noting. With Borderline Racing in the VTYC league, Durkee was among the top 10 racers for the season. Vance was...

A partnership has been growing between Thetford Academy’s Culinary Arts program and the school garden. This fall, school garden coordinator Ehrin Lingeman and culinary arts teacher Jennifer Gernhard teamed up to ensure the garden’s harvest was enjoyed by as many people as possible. Gernhard’s “Cooking for Health” course led an initiative to turn TA’s produce into delicious meals for the café meal program. Students in the class visited the garden each week to harvest tomatoes, peppers, snap beans, summer squash, onions, and more - and learned what it takes to grow fresh produce and bring the “farm to table.”  With each harvest,...

This November, Thetford Academy's Drama Department is excited to present Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls takes place in 1926, a time when radium was a miraculous treatment, Madame Curie was a global celebrity, and luminous watches were the newest fashion item—that is, until the girls who painted them started to get sick with an unexplained illness. The play follows the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe...

Dear TA Families, Season of Gratitude Students spent time in advisory on Tuesday reflecting on the theme of gratitude. With prompts such as - What is one thing you are thankful for now? How does it feel when someone genuinely thanks you for something? Can you think of a time in your life that you'd like to go back to express gratitude to someone? - advisory groups used a circle format as a way to discuss, share, and build community. (Read more about circles as a practice in schools, which we are integrating this year in our advisory program: www.edutopia.org/article/using-circle-practice-classroom.) We also did our...

Audio storytelling – from long-form documentaries to short digital narratives – is a booming creative medium. Through radio, podcasts, and other forms of digital sharing, an audio story invites the listener into an experience that feels both intimate and immersive. At Thetford Academy, current 8th grade students are learning about the art and science of how to tell a great audio story. With support from a Vermont Arts Council Artists in Schools grant, Ms. Downey's English 8 class is hosting Dartmouth radio journalism scholar-in-residence Sophie Crane for a five-day course in narration, recording, interviewing, and writing for the ear. As part...

On Monday, November 7, TA students gathered for a special assembly marking the upcoming Veterans Day holiday. The assembly opened with a performance of "A Light of Hope, A Song of Peace" by Thetford Academy's choral students, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and an introduction to the history and importance of Veterans Day from Social Studies teacher Stacy Barton '99. Guest speakers from Thetford's American Legion Post 79, TA alumnus Fred Adams '69 and Rob Ward, represented the Legion's members, who hail from Thetford, Vershire, W. Fairlee, Fairlee, Post Mills, Orford, and Lyme. Each shared from their personal experiences...
