Thetford Academy’s Disc Golf team took home the title in Vermont’s inaugural High School Disc Golf Championship this weekend. The event, hosted by Disc Golf Vermont at Smuggler’s Notch Resort, was one of the first high school events in the country and part of a growing movement to get disc golf sanctioned as a varsity sport by the Vermont Principal Association.

At Smuggler’s Notch, TA’s seven club players competed against nine other Vermont schools with “quality sportsmanship,” according to coach Scott Ellis. The team was proud of their performance on the difficult Brewster Ridge course, ranked #6 in the world and a host for the Disc Golf professional circuit.

TA’s team trains on the Panther Pride Disc Golf course here on campus. The course, largely built by students and community volunteers over the last several years, is now an 18-hole destination course for players in the Upper Valley and across Vermont.

Some upcoming Disc Golf events at TA include a casual tournament on Saturday, September 12, open to all players from the school and community. TA will also host a community work day this Saturday, September 5 from 9-3 to help prepare the course for the tournament.

Thetford Academy’s club team is open to all students and is accepting new members this fall. “The students at TA involved in Disc Golf are very excited right now,” said Scott Ellis. “I want to get more students involved – I see this sport as a great, healthy hobby for students and for the community.”
