Scott Ellis, coordinator of the Thetford Outdoor Program (TOP), was recognized by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of Vermont (SHAPE Vermont) with the Physical Activity Leadership Award during a ceremony Oct. 19 in Killington. The state-wide award recognizes outstanding individuals who actively promote lifelong health and physical activity. Ellis, who teaches Thetford Academy's half-day outdoor and environmental education course and leads TOP's monthly student adventure trips, has made it his mission at Thetford Academy to engage TA students in active, outdoor experiences. It was a dark and stormy afternoon. Seriously. It was bitter cold. It rained.  It hailed. It sleeted. The field was muddy. The ball stuck in the mucky grass whenever it landed. Thetford Academy junior Shelby Varley is one of sixteen Vermont students selected to serve on the Youth Advisory Council, a partnership of the Vermont Family Network, the Vermont Agency of Education, Vermont Center for Independent Living, Vermont Division of Blind and Visually Impaired, Vermont Department of Labor, Vermont Federation of Families, and Green Mountain Self Advocates and Youth Advocates. As part of Thetford Academy's year-long bicentennial celebration, close to 70 runners and walkers were at the starting line when the blast of an 1820's-style muzzle loader shattered the morning stillness and sent them on their way to compete in the Asa Burton Bicentennial Blitz 5K race. This was a race with a twist. As the competitors traversed the Daniel Grossman Woods Trail on the TA campus, they passed more than two dozen signs containing various TA-related historical facts.
