Dear TA Students, Families, and Staff, Here are a few reflections and reminders as we head into the holiday weekend. I wish for everyone some time in the coming days for rest, connection, and joy.  Sharing Gratitude Student gratitude cards have been adorning our school hallways throughout November. Since 2016, creative writing students at TA have had the unique opportunity to work with Vermont's reigning poetry slam champion, author, poet, and performer Geof Hewitt. This year, Hewitt joined Mr. Mann's Creative Writing course as an artist-in-residence. Over the course of the week with Hewitt, Mann's students engaged in a variety of poetic exercises and excursions. They learned about the art and science of poetry and performance. The following update from the TA Health Office was sent via email to all parents on November 18. Guide for staying home and returning to school: 1. Your child must stay home if they have any of these symptoms: fever, cough, congestion, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, change in taste/smell. 2. If these symptoms last less than 24 hours they DO NOT need a Covid PCR test, but they must be symptom FREE for 24 hours before returning to school. Chris Schmidt, TA's Design Technology teacher, found a new passion for pottery this summer. After taking the class "Alternative Firing Techniques" at the Blackberry Hill Art Center in Orford, NH, Chris was especially interested the the art and science of Raku, an ancient Japanese method of firing pottery that results in surprising colors, glassy and metallic effects, and a unique outcome on every piece. The Raku process involves firing pottery at relatively low temperatures and then moving the hot pieces to a closed container with combustible materials (such as paper or sawdust) that ignite and cause a reaction creating colors...

Hoping to relive its successful debut two weeks ago, TA's team 4886 sent six robots and their student builders to Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH for a competition among 33 robots from six other schools.  Thetford Academy's showing was strong. At the end of 50 qualifying matches, five out of six of TA's robots were in the top half of the standings - with Skunkworks (Eldon Crossett and Avery Crandall) and Turbo-encabulator (Tate Whiteberg) seeded #3 and #4 respectively. These robots made it into the elimination round.
