TA News

Dear TA Community, Near and Far, Greetings from Thetford Academy! We’ve had an inspired autumn here on Thetford Hill, savoring the colors and mountain views. We hope you, too, have had a beautiful fall and wish for everyone plenty of warmth and light to take us through the winter season. We welcomed a large ninth grade class this year. As our 33 TA 8th graders moved up to high school in August, they were joined by 41 new classmates. The class of 2028 is 74 students strong with a dozen different Upper Valley towns represented. So many talents, personalities, and dreams! We...

Dear TA Families, In keeping with the season of giving, our assembly this week featured a variety of clubs and classes generously raising funds and awareness for community needs on both the local and global levels. It was inspiring to have so many student groups modeling our school values of Care, Cooperation, and Diversity!  On behalf of the Social Justice Club, Aiden Otterman '27 and Caroline Watts '25, promoted an upcoming bake sale fundraiser for the Thetford Food Shelf. Culinary Arts Teacher Jennifer Gernhard congratulated the ceramics and cooking for health classes for their success with this year's 'Empty Bowl' project. She announced ('drumroll, please...

Nearly forty students are competing on Thetford Academy's indoor track and field team, which started its season with a bang last weekend.  Competing at the University of Vermont against dozens of other Vermont schools, the boys team finished 2nd, behind only track powerhouse Essex. Uly Junker-Boyce '25 set a new D-II state record in the 55 meter dash, and Ava Hayden '25 and Brady Sloop '25 both set new school records in the 1000.  The boys team, which finished second at the Vermont state...

Calling all Panthers! This year's alumni basketball game is scheduled for Saturday, December 28th at 11 a.m. and we are excited! We've got a good roster of alumni from the classes of 1984 to the class of 2020, but could still use a few more players. As always, all alumni are invited, welcome, and encouraged to join us. We don't mind how long ago you graduated or how rusty your skills are, we've got a spot for you on the court. Don't want to run? There will be a 3-point contest - sharpshooters welcome! Preregistration is not required, but it does...

Dear TA Families, Winter is here! The snow and chilly temps change up our routines - but don't deter us from heading outside during the school day. Some early winter season spotlights (featured in this week's photos): Kathy Hooke's forestry class has been taking advantage of TA's hilltop yurt to continue their outdoor studies into December. This past week they ventured off campus with classmate Dempsey McGovern in the lead to learn more about one Thetford family's forestry planning and tour their land. Scott Ellis' environmental studies and outdoor education class will embark on their winter overnight next week, a culminating experience of months...

Guest post by Hanae Debo, Class of 2025 The annual Youth Climate Leadership Academy (YCLA) is hosted by the Vermont Energy Education Program (VEEP) and the New Hampshire Energy Education Program (NHEEP) at Hulbert Outdoor Center in Fairlee, VT. It is a two-day event in which high school students from NH and VT come together to create a project for climate action at their schools, meet other young people who are passionate about the environment, learn relevant skills in climate advocacy, and this year, play in the snow!!  Thetford Academy Climate Alliance (TACA) attended last year for the first time and we...
