Grades 9-11:  Applications are online at www.giv.org for the 2019 Governor’s Institutes of Vermont.  The Governors Institutes are intensive, week-long educational experiences held during the summer on select Vermont college campuses.  GIV is for any 9th – 11th grader with a passion for or particular interest in arts, engineering, current issues and activism, math, science, technology, or entrepreneurship.  Students who enjoy GIV tend to have a strong intellectual or artistic curiosity, possess academic skills equal to or above their grade level, and function well in a highly independent learning environment. Four Thetford Academy students participated in the Governor’s Institute of Vermont’s Winter Weekend Program: Mack Briglin '22, Casey MacVeagh '20, Lily MacVeagh '20, and Emi Vaughan '21. The No. 2 seed TA varsity girls basketball team soundly defeated a talented White River Valley High School team on Friday, March 1, to win the VPA Division III quarterfinals. While the final score of 64-32 points to a decisive Panther victory, White River Valley, a young team with only one senior, played a strong first half and continued to fight hard through the fourth quarter. Sophomore Eloise Silver Van Meter's recitation of “Zacuanpopalotls” by Brenda Cárdenas came in first place in TA’s Poetry Out Loud Contest on Feb. 12. The runner up was William Bosco, who presented “Analysis of Baseball” by May Swenson. Eloise recited “Zacuanpopalotls” in front of the student body on Feb. 27 during Assembly (see above photo), dramatizing the poem with energy, pacing it deliberately, and perfectly pronouncing a number of lines in Spanish. She will recite at the Poetry Out Loud Vermont semifinals at the Barre Opera House on March 7, along with 30 other school winners. ...
