Text by Charlie Buttrey, image courtesy Linnea Spelman A very young but enthusiastic Thetford Academy middle school cross-country team traveled to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe on Sunday Oct.28 to compete with hundreds of other athletes at the Vermont State Middle School Cross-Country Championships. Unlike the varsity meet, where schools are placed in divisions based on student body, all of the schools race against each other at this meet, so TA was racing against some schools several times TA's size.  And despite competing with just one 8th-grader on the roster, the TA girls finished in a very strong 5th place. 8th-grader Emma...


The TA boys and girls cross country teams will compete in the Vermont State Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27, at TA's Dan Grossman Woods Trail.  The races will begin at 10:30 a.m.  TA girls will run at 11:30 a.m. and the Panther boys will compete at 1 p.m.; some TA boys will participate in the Challenge Race at 2:15 p.m. The Thetford girls cross country teams is led by senior captain Anabel Reining.  Her running mate, Eloise Van Meter, is running first for the Panther girls.  Her sophomore classmate Layla Hanissian has run second this season.  The squad is rounded out by newcomers...


TA's 1st-seed varsity girls defeated 16th-seed Winooski 6-0 in the opening round of the VPA Division III playoffs yesterday (Wednesday, Oct. 23). On a cold, damp, windy afternoon on TA's lower soccer field, the Panthers dominated from the start, racking up five goals in the first half before adding their sixth in the second half.  Scoring for the Panthers were Lily Brown, Kiana Johnson, Casey MacVeagh (2), Madi Powers, and Becca Wells, with assists from Kiran Black, Geneva Horster, Kiana Johnson, and Ellen Veracka. The Panthers take on number nine-seed Stowe in the quarterfinals at home tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 25).  Game time...


The 13th-seed varsity boys scored the first and last goal in their playoff game against 4th-seed Leland & Gray, but the Rebels scored the intervening three, as Leland & Gray edged the Panthers 3-2 yesterday. Nine minutes into the game, Ethan Steingas put a Tate Linehan pass into the net, and the Panthers took a 1-0 lead.  The lead didn't last long; within a minute, the Rebels tied the game, after which they added two more goals within the next 17  minutes; the score at the half was 3-1 Leland & Gray. The TA varsity girls completed their season in spectacular fashion, defeating U-32 3-2 on a Namya Benjamin shot three minutes into overtime, with Casey MacVeagh getting the assist. The 11-1-1 Panthers earned the top seed for the VPA Division III playoffs, with pairings to be announced tomorrow.  The Panthers dominated the first half, with goals by Kiana Johnson and Casey, each assisting the other on her goal.
