TA News

Dear TA Families, As the rhythms of the school year go, a highlight for me as each semester comes to a close is attending final presentations in classes. Being in the audience as students proudly, thoughtfully, nervously - but also confidently - share their work and creativity, their reflections, and a bit about themselves, is an opportunity to witness and celebrate the culmination of five months of learning and growth.  Featured in the photos this week are two of the classes I visited in recent days. Students in English 10 presented their sophomore anthology projects in the Martha Jane Rich Theater on Thursday...

Dental Care this Winter: A great opportunity: if your student usually sees the Ronald McDonald Van for dental care and you would like to have your student's teeth cleaned please return the attached forms as soon as possible.  • The HealthHUB dental hygienist will be doing dental cleanings at TA starting January 27th. Thetford Academy sophomore Nick Smallwood's science experiment is headed to space! Nick recently attended a Go for Launch!" (GFL!) space camp hosted at Norwich University. GFL! is exciting program that leverages space flight and exploration to help students develop skills in STEM, teamwork, communication, research design, and leadership. Students in the two-day program work side-by-side with an astronaut - this year it was Greg H. Johnson, a retired NASA astronaut and Air Force pilot who flew two Space Shuttle missions - and other experts in STEM to cultivate ideas for conducting science on the International Space Station. During the...

In Vermont’s winter season, many of us spend time reflecting on our last year and planning the year ahead. On campus, we are doing this too, thinking about our year in the garden and taking stock of how we’re doing in our farm-to-school programming.  Even amidst the chaos and excitement of a big potato harvest or long work day, I try to capture tangible metrics like pounds of veggies harvested or the volume of food scraps we’ve diverted from the landfill. After some end-of-season number crunching, I’m happy to report the following outputs.  In the fall semester, Thetford Academy harvested over 500...

In Thetford Academy's half-day Environmental Studies and Outdoor Education class, students spend a lot of time learning in, and from, the forest ecosystem. They also learn basic outdoor survival skills, building their own shelters to use over the course of the semester. Every student creates a "solo spot" shelter, a place for quiet reflection, reading, and writing. The semester culminates with an assignment that puts students' new skills to the test. Bringing only the bare minimum, they head to their solo spots to spend the night in the woods. In the winter, students not only face their fears of being...
