TA News

Dear TA Families, Kudos to our whole school community for the many 'wins' we experienced today. Each grade level had their own agenda and version of the day, so check in with your student to get details about specific activities and personal highlights. A common theme across all the grades: Taking time out of our normal routines to celebrate students and their unique journeys, accomplishments, learning, and growth. Congratulations especially to the Class of 2024 for taking the senior roundtable experience to the next level this year - and to their junior classmates who showed up ready to participate as awesome audience members....

Despite last week's 16-inch snowfall, spring has officially arrived at TA and garden activities have begun! Beginning in mid-February, when the day length reached over 10 hours, plants began waking up from their winter slumber and began to grow again. The longer days provide enough natural light for most seeds to germinate and grow - and Horticulture students, in particular, have been taking advantage. Students are busy manifesting green on campus, working in the greenhouse and outdoors daily. In the greenhouse, they are seeding crops for the school garden and themselves, packing the space with bright green baby seedlings. Last...

The following letter accompanied students' report cards, which were distributed on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Dear Thetford Academy Parents and Caregivers, Here on Thetford Hill, the daffodils are waiting patiently for the last of the snow patches to melt before bursting into bloom. While we wait for the weather and flowers to indicate spring has truly begun, our routines at school have already shifted to a new season. The last day of March marked the half-way point of 2nd semester. Enclosed with this letter is your student’s third quarter report card. As always, we ask that you take time to review and discuss...

Students have so many experiences over the course of their years at TA – internships, sports, clubs, challenging courses, theater, music, outdoor activities – it’s easy to believe that these experiences alone are enough to foster learning and growth. In Outward Bound’s early days, instructor Rusty Baille famously agreed: “Let the mountains speak for themselves.”  But just as the mountains do not speak for themselves, we do not learn from experience itself. We must reflect on those experiences to make meaningful connections, grow, and find new challenges. That is the goal of our student portfolios at TA and the Spring Roundtable Days...

Thetford Academy is excited to share a unique opportunity for girls ages 12-15 who are interested in mountain biking and having fun outdoors. Little Bellas UV, a non-competitive mountain biking program, uses a mentoring model to help girls find a sense of empowerment and self-confidence. While interacting with positive mentors, conquering obstacles, and mastering a skill, participants will have fun on trails and play games in an uninhibited environment that encourages them to be themselves. Beginning on Monday, June 29, Little Bellas will host a weekly mountain bike clinic the Upper Valley. If your student is interested in learning to ride or...

Dear TA Families, Snow? What snow? Here at TA, we are getting ready for spring! Student Learning Spotlight In a full circle seasonal experience, the 7th graders spent time in the warmth of the greenhouse this week, cleaning and sorting seeds from crops they harvested last fall, such as corn and squash native to the New England Wabenaki. They also started other seeds indigenous to our area, like ground cherries, to ready for the planting season later in the spring. Next month, students will get their seeds and seedlings into the ground in our school garden using traditional Three Sisters methods (featuring corn, beans,...
