TA News

Photo credit: Renee BrownAfter an exciting four-game winning streak to start the season, TA's varsity boys have struggled to maintain momentum on the field. The last few weeks have challenged the Panthers as they clocked four consecutive losses, balancing their season record to 4-4. While facing some of Vermont's best teams, though, the Panthers' determination and hard work shined through - there were no easy wins for our opponents. On Friday, the Panthers went toe to toe with the Montpelier Solons in the first half before the Solons' came back to score three goals in the second. Earlier games vs....

This year, Thetford Academy's Middle School Outdoor Leadership students are the stewards of all things compost. With tons of composting knowledge under their belts from composting with Cat Buxton at Thetford Elementary School (TES), students were ready to hit the ground running. Each Friday, students collect full buckets of food scraps from five locations across campus. They weigh the collected material and record data points like consistency and ingredients and note if there are excessive amounts of any one particular food. They then take the buckets to the timber-framed compost facility, built by TA's Timber Framing class in 2022. There, it’s...

Dear TA Families, As September comes to a close, we mark the midway point of Quarter 1. It's hard to believe, but students have been in school for a little over four weeks already! Quarter 1 Check-In Mid-quarter is a good time to check in with the TA student(s) in your family about how school is going. They should be well versed in the routines and expectations of their classes and making progress with the concepts and skills of the first units of study. Ask students what they've been learning, exploring, and accomplishing. What has piqued their interest the most thus far? What have...

On Saturday, October 7, Thetford Academy will host the 32nd Woods Trail Run, a truly unique TA event that for many participants and spectators, is the most-anticipated cross country event of the season. The event, founded by TA parent and former board member Dan Grossman, is well known for many things: great music, great food (shout out to the Thetford Academy Alumni Association), great energy, and great people. Of course, the Woods Trail Run is also known for its difficult 5K course, the Dan Grossman Woods Trail, designed by former Olympic biathlete John Morton. The course winds through TA’s forested...

Autumn is a great time to get outside in Vermont, and the Thetford Outdoor Program is making the most of it. TOP outings are free and open to all TA students and showcase the best of the season in the Upper Valley. With options from rock climbing in Royalton, canoeing the Connecticut River, to yurt camping in the Thetford Hill State Forest, there is something for every type of outdoor adventurer to enjoy. To claim a spot on a TOP outing, students should reach out to Scott Ellis, TA's Thetford Outdoor Program coordinator. Space is limited and programs may be...

Dear TA Families, We had a fabulous day hiking, exploring, and enjoying the trails and peaks of nearby mountains on Friday. The weather cooperated to make the 45th annual TA Mountain Day a success. Enjoy this preliminary photo gallery. We will add more to the mix as we continue to collect and curate photos next week. A few 'save the dates' as we look ahead: Friday, Sept. 29 - Welcome Dance, hosted by the 12th grade for all students Friday, Oct. 6 - Fall Inservice Day, no school for students Saturday, Oct. 7 - Woods Trail Run, major regional cross country meet hosted by TA Monday, Oct. 9 -...
