Dear TA Families & Students, We are planning a summer program at Thetford Academy for June-July 2021, designed to support and engage students in response to the extended period of COVID impact on the school experience. The program will include opportunities for students who need to make up academic credits as well as for those who are simply seeking a hands-on, outdoor experience this summer. The TA summer program will build on and take place in collaboration with the existing TOP summer leadership trips that have been offered over the past 4 summers. We will have more details to share about the expanded TA...

Thetford Academy's Alpine Ski Team, led by coaches Amy Huyffer and Paul Dixon, finished out the season with the boys competing in the state championships for the fourth year in a row. The slalom race was held on Monday, March 15, at Cochran's Ski Resort and the giant slalom on Wednesday at Smuggler's Notch. The competing TA boys (Knute Linehan, Jack Hastings, Ben Acker, Logan Wurtz, Harley Ransom, and Tucker Gaffney) raced hard on a tough course Monday at Cochran's, with temps in the single digits and "firm" snow conditions. Riley Burkins, a four-year varsity veteran, injured his shoulder in the...

Dear TA Families & Students, Last July Thetford Academy issued an important statement condemning racism in all forms and made a list of ten commitments to guide our work to become an actively antiracist institution. I want to share a brief update on some of the efforts that have taken root since then. The TA Antiracism Task Force launched in the fall and is playing a lead role in this phase of our work. The task force includes TA staff, parents, alumni, and community representatives. More recently, the Student Alliance for Racial Justice started to provide TA students the opportunity to get directly...

Dear TA Families & Students, One thing we have all learned over the past 12 months is that predicting the future is risky business. The uncertainty, unknowns, and rapidly evolving nature of the pandemic have deeply challenged efforts at long-range planning. I feel confident, however, looking out five months and sharing the good news that we expect a return to our full TA experience for next school year. What better way to mark the one-year anniversary of schools closing down last March than to set our sights on a post-pandemic start to the fall 2021 semester? I am also confident that Thetford Academy...

Dear TA Families & Students,  This one-year pandemic anniversary is intense, isn't it? To go back a year and realize just how little we knew what was coming and how long it would last can make one's head spin.  Despite 12 months of navigating life and school through a pandemic, we have so much good going on. Here's a partial round up: The Thetford Selectboard chose the entire teaching and school staff of our community as one of their recipients of the Annual Civic Pride award. This award, along with the townspeople's passing of the 2021-22 school budget on March 2, is cause for...

Dear TA Families and Students, We welcomed the month of March by introducing the in-person component of our 2nd semester schedule. It was great to feel the energy of having students and teachers together in real time - doing hands-on learning with one another and with the materials and spaces designed for the discipline. Attached are a couple of snapshots from the week. The schedule is not without its complexities, of course, especially as approximately one quarter of TA students continue to opt for a fully remote experience. Teachers are trying multiple approaches to best meet the needs of our on-campus learners and our...
