TA News

There is a cooler touch to the morning air and an earlier slant to the setting sun in the evenings. Indeed, autumn is arriving soon and back-to-school season is upon us. Thetford Academy officially launches the new school year on Wednesday, August 27. We are looking forward to seeing the campus buzzing again with the return of students.  We had a ‘soft launch’ to the school year today, with a special half-day for our 7th and 9th graders. They had the campus to themselves to help students navigate the start to their middle school and high school programs. On Wednesday we welcome everyone,...

Following the quieter summer months on campus with just a dozen or so employees keeping the school humming, we welcomed teachers, paraeducators, and other staff on a school-year calendar back to school last Thursday for three packed days of professional development.  Back-to-school inservice days provide vital time for educators to prepare for the launch of a new year and to reconnect as colleagues. The agenda includes a mix of large group sessions, department meetings, grade-level team planning, and individual classroom prep time. Activities range from the fun (scavenger hunt in the garden) to the serious (annual bloodborne pathogens training) - and...

For the second year in a row, TA's track and field athletes past and present gathered on campus for the Scott Chapman Memorial Cowboy Classic Field Meet. The event honors coach Scott Chapman, whose expertise helped bring TA's indoor and outdoor track and field teams to many championships. In addition to honoring Scott, the Cowboy Classic has become an annual track and field reunion, bringing generations of TA athletes together in celebration of their shared sport. Hosted by Scott's son Cole Chapman '15 and TA track & field coaches Emily Silver and Joel Breakstone, this year's field meet featured events in...

Earlier this month, Thetford Academy hosted the inaugural session of the Upper Valley Speech and Debate Camp (UVSDC). The camp, designed for students rising into 7th to 10th grade, is a new collaboration between the debate teams of Hanover High School and Thetford Academy. Student leaders from both teams - TA senior Daniel Mann and Hanover's Oliver Benedict - planned the camp's curriculum and led participants through a week-long introduction to the art of debate. The ten young debaters, hailing from Hanover, Lyme, and Thetford Academy, spent the week learning about speech writing, rhetoric, and persuasion. They debated the silly (is...

Reliable. Hard working. Kind. Steady. Organized. Helpful. Dedicated. These are some of the many awesome adjectives shared in response to the prompt: What words come to mind to describe our colleague John Brown?  Congratulations to Director of Buildings and Grounds John Brown, the recipient of the 2025 Peters Family Dedicated Employee of the Year Award! Initiated by TA educator and alum Ted Peters ‘63 in honor of his parents, the annual award spotlights a Thetford Academy employee for their deep commitment to nurture, support, and inspire the school community. Ted always had in mind that the award would be open to...

Thetford Academy's student leaders had another great year in Up for Learning's Getting to 'Y' program, a statewide initiative empowering young people to make a difference in their school communities. With support from adult partners, GTY participants learn to lead a cycle of Youth Participatory Action Research and use data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to identify and address the concerns of their peers. In the 2024-2025 year, Thetford Academy's GTY club focused on the mental health challenges they felt were at the root of many of the concerns identified in YRBS...
