TA News

There is no question that a healthy sense of adventure and an entrepreneurial spirit are good qualities to have when growing up in rural Vermont. Jonas Cole, Class of 2008, who was raised two doors down from Thetford Academy, remembers how “making your own fun” was a key part of his Vermont childhood.  As the sole proprietor of Vermont Bike & Brew, based in Thetford, Jonas now helps others find that fun, connecting his clients with the outdoor adventures and small town joys of the Upper Valley. Every year from May to October, Vermont Bike & Brew rents from a fleet...

Last week, TA's Counseling Office hosted the first in its annual series of college information sessions. The session, geared specifically toward seniors and their families, covered topics such as: how to navigate the college application process, the basics of applying to college and for financial aid, and how to identify scholarship opportunities. Counseling Director Mark Pichette also shared information about how colleges evaluate candidates and the latest updates on the role of standardized tests in the college admissions process. If families missed the session or want to review the content again, they can review the recording here. The Counseling Office...

Dear TA Families, Kudos to students and staff for their Mountain Day hikes yesterday, embracing the chilly winds and accepting the adaptive plans to solve transportation issues and other logistical challenges. Every grade got off of Thetford Hill this year and headed out to one of the mountains we gaze at daily from our library windows. We will compile and share photos next week. Join us on campus today and next Saturday! TA is hosting homecoming games, with the two boys soccer teams, JV and Varsity, taking on North Country; both games at 10am. The Girls Varsity plays at 12:30pm against Harwood. The...

We are seeing slightly fewer students out sick with upper respiratory viruses (cold/cough/sore throat) at the end of this week. We are hopeful that both this non-Covid virus and Covid may be decreasing some. Friendly remindersL If your student is sick, please let the Main Office or Health Office know what symptoms they are having when you call in. If your child has: a fever over 100.0 degrees, vomiting, headache, sore throat, nausea, diarrhea, significant congestion (that's not allergies), communicable rash (scarlet fever, impetigo) they must stay home. The incubation period for Covid is 1-3 days usually, however the Covid rapid tests are showing positive results approximately...

TA's annual Woods Trail Run is both cross country event and community celebration, and one of the most beloved TA traditions. Every year, on the first Saturday in October, TA's campus fills with thousands of runners and spectators from all over New England and beyond. In addition, the meet mobilizes an impressive number of local volunteers, some who've been with the race since its 1991 debut. This year's event on October 1 and the follow-up event, the Vermont cross country state championship meet on October 29, will be led by veteran meet director David McGinn. There are still many opportunities...

On Saturday, September 24, Thetford Academy will host a celebration of life for its longtime varsity girls basketball coach, Eric Ward '76, who passed away in May 2022. Ward was a beloved member of the TA community, a mentor and leader to his athletes, and a warm and generous friend. As his sister Pam Robinson wrote in his obituary, "He forged lifelong relationships with coaches and referees. Eric’s peers remember him as a great coach and a true ambassador of the sport. He was a motivator and fighter to the end, and one of the brightest and most giving men." At...
