On Thursday, April 6, Margaret Smallwood was one of two youth in the state of Vermont to receive Prevention WorksVT!'s Prevention Champion Award at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier. Margaret received the award for being a youth empowerment leader who has contributed to substance misuse prevention efforts at Thetford Academy and throughout our community. Since joining Getting to Y in 2020, Margaret has been an anchoring member of the team. Dear TA Families, Roundtable Reflections Congratulations to all of the students who did their portfolio presentations during our first of two roundtable days on Wednesday! Students in grades 7, 8, and 10 presented to their peers in advisory, and students in grade 9 will do the same next month. Dear TA Families, Despite the lighter nature of today’s subject line, I’d like to start my weekly memo with some reflections on a really serious topic – school shootings in America. As we all know by now, there was another violent attack on a school in our country earlier this week. Three students and three adults at an elementary school in Nashville died and their community is heartbroken, traumatized, and forever changed. In April, Thetford Academy's VEX Robotics team 4886 is headed to the VEX World Championship event in Dallas, TX. After a successful season of regional and state events, all of TA's teams have qualified to compete and TA will send 11 students to Worlds. The two middle school and two high school teams will join thousands of STEM students from around the country and the world to apply what they've learned in robotics club to a global stage. TA senior Madi Mousley was recently awarded the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association's inaugural Eric Ward Memorial Scholarship for Division III and IV. The scholarship, named in memory of Thetford Academy's longtime varsity girls basketball Coach Eric Ward, recognizes a "female student athlete who is a team player, displays good sportsmanship, has a positive impact on her team, and has a passion for defense." Dear TA Families, The days are lengthening, this afternoon the sun is shining, and under the melting snow today a few daffodil shoots appeared on the quad. As we transition between seasons, it has been a busy time in the sugar shack with the wood stove cranking and lots of boiling - and also a busy time in the greenhouse getting seed starts going in anticipation of spring planting.
