Dear TA Families, One of the many markers this year of an evolving 'return to normal' is an uptick in the number of field trips students are embarking on. Field trips were traditionally an integral component of the environmental studies and outdoor education class and teacher Scott Ellis has brought back a full schedule of them this year. Students in his class visited the Whitman Brook Orchard in Quechee last week to learn about grafting and pruning apple trees, and this week they did trail and clean-up work at a TA-adopted campsite in Haverhill. The high school design tech class traveled...

Notes from the classroom: Guest post by English teacher Joe Deffner. Whenever we talk about race, I am always looking to bring the conversation to Vermont. I don't want students to think of racism as a problem that exists in other places, but not in Vermont. In The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, the book my students are currently studying, it seems to me that racial profiling plays a role in the traffic stop of Starr's friend, Khalil. It also played a role in the subsequent shooting of Khalil by Officer 115. Some people would dismiss the events of the...

When Finbar Curtin and Rob Root (Class of 2016) met at Thetford Academy a decade ago they could not have predicted that they would one day set sail from Mallets Bay on Lake Champlain bound for the Caribbean on a refurbished sailboat named Sofia. TA’s alumni relations team recently caught up with the pair.TA: Thanks for taking the time to chat with your alma mater! Can you tell the TA community how you got the idea to sail together from Vermont to the Caribbean? Finbar: Sure. Rob and I have been friends since we were at TA and we both grew...

Longtime Thetford Academy teacher, Art Sharkey passed away on October 14, 2022. Several years ago, he wrote about that experience and shared his remembrances with us at TA. Below is the text from Mr. Sharkey's obituary, submitted to Thetford Academy by his children, Adam Sharkey and Kate Schramm, both TA alumni. Arthur Patrick Sharkey, Jr., 85, passed...

Coach Tony Strat shared, "It’s been an amazing experience to be a former team captain on the girls varsity team at TA to coaching at TA on the same fields against the same schools I played for 6 years at TA." The Panthers wrapped up their regular season Saturday with a varsity boys soccer game at TA and the Southern Vermont League Cross Country A championships meet in Rutland, VT. The Panthers celebrated senior soccer players Aidan Keane, Nolan Pepe, Jacob Gilman,...
