Dear TA Families, Here are a few of the highlights as we jumped into a busy spring schedule after break this week: Service Activities The Operation Day's Work event on Wednesday had student crews working throughout our community, painting, spring yard cleaning, baking, car washing, and more - at organizations like the Thetford Church, at people's homes, and here on campus. Check out some of the many crews in today's photos. Congratulations to the ODW student organizers for all of their coordination and thanks to the many students who participated in this service-oriented fundraiser, despite the rainy weather. The week ended with another community service...

Each summer, Thetford Academy alumni gather for class reunions - some at TA Alumni Association's Alumni Day, some at Thetford Academy's outdoor classroom, some at local spots nearby. This year, we've got several reunion events in the works and hope you can join us! Alumni Day: Held on the Saturday after graduation on campus, the Thetford Academy Alumni Association welcomes alumni from all class years to join them for their annual banquet event. This year, the event is on June 11, 2022, and starts at 4:30...

On Monday, May 2, VT representatives (Windsor-Orange 2) Tim Briglin and Jim Masland visited with Thetford Academy students on campus to talk food policy. The group, which included students from Casey Huling’s Why Food Matters class, Stacy Barton’s Civics class, and Betsy Pond’s World History class, have been studying government, civic engagement, and the impact decisions made by our elected leaders have on our daily lives. The representatives spoke specifically about S. 100, a bill that is currently moving through the Vermont Legislature. The proposed law would use an existing surplus in the State’s Education Fund, to extend, for one...

Dear TA Families, We had a few schoolwide activities during power hour this week, in honor of Earth Day, that raised our collective awareness about the spring growing season and sustainable practices. On Monday in advisory, students planted flowers and created a multitude of cheerful blue planters filled with pansies and friendly messages that are now adorning campus. Yesterday at lunch, the 7th graders conducted a food scraps audit that required every student to dispose of their lunchtime food waste into sorted buckets to be measured and analyzed in science classes. Today the TA Climate Alliance engaged students in an Earth Day quiz created by Hunter...

Dear TA Families, Yesterday's sunny skies and warm temps meant an increasing amount of outside activity during the school day. The garden, the quad, the athletic fields, the Anderson picnic tables, the trails, the yurt, and the outdoor classroom all provided outdoor spaces for classes, clubs, and lunchtime gatherings. We look forward to more of this to come! School Calendar Overview Spring break for TA is still a week away, April 25-29. Many have inquired why the break is late this year and why school vacations in the Upper Valley don't all align. Setting and aligning school calendars is a tricky business and...

In the fall of 2021, TA's Botany elective course initiated a revitalization project for Thetford Academy’s school greenhouse. With help from the Thetford Outdoor Program’s School Garden Coordinator Ehrin Lingeman and Botany instructor Gary Engler, students developed a plan that would encourage more students to spend time in the greenhouse and gain the benefits of a warm, light-filled green space during Vermont's long winter. In addition, the students' proposal aimed to: Produce a new student-centered multipurpose space in the arts and sciences building that focuses on improving student mental health and natural science explorationRevitalize the greenhouse for the science department and other...
