Thetford Academy robotics team 4886S, String Theory, is going to Worlds! Senior Connor Kutter-Walker and junior Duncan MacPhee won the Lobstah Bowl VEX VR5 Signature Event in Bangor, Maine, two weeks ago. Competing as the only team from the NH/VT league, they faced 60 teams from across the US and Canada - including California, Tennessee, and Quebec. String Theory was the only team representing our NH/VT league at this event and they faced tough competition. After a challenging start, the team came back to win the tournament outright with their Quebec partner team. This signature event victory means String Theory has...

Calling all Panthers! This Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., Thetford Academy’s varsity #6 seeded boys soccer team will host #10 Winooski in a semifinal matchup.  The Panthers quarterfinal win v. Vergennes last Friday was a thriller, with the two teams tied up 2-2 after 90 minutes of regular play - with no movement in overtime or double overtime. After a nailbiting round of penalty kicks (TA went 10 for 10), the Panthers clinched the win. Seniors Henry Trage and Owen Goodrich each scored a goal for TA, Emmett Terry had an assist, and goalie Matt McGovern '27 covered the net with nine...

A young and enthusiastic middle school cross-country team had a terrific season, culminating with some stalwart performances at the middle school state championship meet in St. Albans on Sunday, October 26th. Emelyn Leitao '31 was the top finisher among the girls, setting a new school record on that course, finishing in 13:02, and earning a medal for a top-15 finish among 7th-graders. She was followed by TES 5th-grader Ada Meyer, whose time of 13:57 placed her second among all 5th-graders in the state. TES 6th-grader Molly Cushman was our third-place finisher in 14:27, followed by Elly Emery '31 (15:42), TES 5th-grader...

Dear TA Families, Quarter Comes to a CloseFirst, I want to emphasize this pivotal time in the academic calendar. The upcoming week is the finale to the first quarter of the school year.  For high school students, this is especially important to note. With our semester-block schedule at the high school level, classes meet intensively for two quarters only (from Aug-Jan and Jan-June) - that means that Friday, Oct. 31 marks the midway point of fall semester classes. For middle school students, things are a little different. They mostly have the same classes and teachers for the full school year. The only exception is...

Each fall the UVM College of Education and the Vermont Agency of Education team up to honor and celebrate outstanding educators throughout the state who have been nominated by their schools and supervisory unions. Congratulations to Stacy Barton, Thetford Academy’s pick for the 2025 Vermont Outstanding Educator Award! Stacy has been teaching middle school and high school social studies at Thetford Academy since 2010. During that time, she has had an incredible impact on a generation of students, many of whom take more than one class with her during their time at TA. Stacy engages students in the meaty, meaningful, and...

This fall, Thetford Academy teachers are partnering with Dartmouth College students in a Design Thinking course to explore an important question: How might we better understand and incorporate student and family perspectives in our school’s continued transition to proficiency-based grading? TA’s Design Thinking Team includes colleague coach Becky DiFrancesco, English teacher and Teaching and Learning Coordinator Kristen Downey, special education faculty Amanda Gray, and English teachers Sarah Hancock and Abby MacGregor. Yesterday, students, parents, and teachers gathered for the first community session to share experiences, challenges, and priorities related to proficiency-based grading. After the session, Abby MacGregor reflected, “I really appreciated that...
