9th Grade Honor Students, Photo courtesy of Dan Grossman. Every year, TA recognizes the hard work of its honor students with a festive spring celebration. The TA Honors Celebration has long been hosted in the Vaughan Alumni Gymnasium, transformed into a banquet hall for the occasion. Students gather with peers, parents, grandparents, faculty, and staff for a catered dinner and presentations, including the now-TA traditional "Speak Chorus." Like many traditions at TA, during Covid, the Honors event required some adaptation. Last year, Covid necessitated a virtual, prerecorded recognition focusing on honorees in the graduating senior class. But this year, with loosened restrictions,...

Two TA students, Elliott Jones '22 and Layliana Benjamin '26, were selected to co-present at the University of Michigan Medical's 2021 Adolescent Conference on Health. The conference, now in its seventh year, is part of Michigan Medical's Adolescent Health Initiative (AHI), a program that aims to "advance innovative adolescent-centered health care through practice improvement, education, research, and youth and community engagement." More than half the events at this year's conference were co-facilitated by youth. Elliott and Layliana have been active in TA's "Getting to Y" (GTY) program this year, a youth-driven exploration of Vermont's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)...

Students will share their TA stories that highlight these values and what they have valued during their time at Thetford Academy. Alumni, parents, friends, and neighbors are all invited to share their "What I Value about Thetford Academy" stories, too. Use your phone, webcam, or camera of your choice...

TA students Mary Bosco and Eldon Crossett, supported by YATST advisors Kate Owen and Rebecca Walter, recently facilitated a global conversation between youth and adults at a conference session focused on the question: "What should be the purpose of school?" Thetford Academy's YATST team (Youth and Adults Transforming Schools Together) spent the 2020-2021 school year gathering data about students' school experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the initial data as a starting point, the group facilitated a series of students focus group sessions to learn more. These focus groups explored topics including: What have we learned about school during COVID and what...

Former Mount Saint Joseph basketball coach Mark Benetato and filmmaker Duane Carleton joined students in Mr. Deffner's Civil Rights Literature class on Monday. Carleton's film "Divided by Diversity" (2016) explores what happened when five students from the Bronx, NY joined the Rutland school's community after fleeing violence in some of New York's toughest urban housing projects. Carleton's documentary chronicles the boys' experiences during their time in Vermont. On the court, the students helped Mount Saint Joseph win a Division II state championship in 2012. Yet despite the team's success, the players faced community push back that ranged from resentment to...
